Jerry McClain Obituary, Death – Retired Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department Veteran Dies at 66

Jerry Austin McClain, 66, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Bowers Hospice House following a long illness.

Jerry dedicated much of his life to public service through his career with the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department. As a retired veteran of the department, he was remembered for his commitment to the community he proudly served and the lasting impression he made on those around him.

Remembering Jerry Austin McClain

Outside of his professional life, Jerry had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time fishing along the Guyandotte and New Rivers, as well as at the R. D. Bailey Reservoir.

Jerry was also known for his sense of humor and his ability to turn his outdoor adventures into memorable stories. His family and friends will remember the tall tales he shared about his fishing trips, along with stories of his unforgettable hole in one.

To those who knew him personally, Jerry was more than a retired law enforcement veteran. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend who brought humor, friendship and companionship into the lives of many.

Jerry McClain’s Family

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Robert “Bob/Hack” McClain Sr.; his mother, Shirley Ann McClain; and his brother, Robert “Bobby” McClain Jr.

He leaves behind his sister, Kelly Edwards of Nevada, as well as his nephews Benjamin Edwards of Princeton, West Virginia, along with Benjamin’s daughter Harper; Dustin Edwards and his wife Emily of Saulsville, West Virginia, and their son Brennex; and Zachary McClain of Tennessee.

He is also survived by his niece, Brandi (Morgan) McKinney, her husband Terry, and their son Jameson of Summerville, South Carolina.

Jerry also leaves behind a close circle of special friends, including Danny Lumbo and his family, Roger Snow and Randolph McGraw. Their friendships spanned many years and were an important part of Jerry’s life.

Gratitude to Jerry’s Caregivers

Jerry’s family has expressed special appreciation to his caregivers, Rani Griggs and Chris Slough, as well as the staff at Bowers Hospice House.

Their devoted care and compassion provided important comfort and support to Jerry during his final days.

Jerry “Jake” McClain Funeral Services

Funeral services for Jerry will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Evans-Calfee Funeral Service, with Rev. Michael Knotts officiating.

Visitation will take place from noon until the time of the service.

Family, friends and members of the community will have the opportunity to gather together to honor Jerry’s life and offer their support to those mourning his passing.

Jerry Austin McClain, affectionately known as “Jake,” leaves behind a legacy of public service, friendship and a life filled with the activities he loved.

His dedication to the Wyoming County community, his passion for fishing and golf, and especially his humor and storytelling will remain part of the memories shared by those who knew him.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues and everyone whose life he touched.
